Unlike creatures in many other films, the creatures ofthe Harry Potter films “are very important to the story,” says producer David Heyman. Harry Potter’s story could not be told without them. They provide lessons and challenges to our hero that ultimately help him gain the skills and confidence needed for his battle with Lord Voldemort and the Dark Forces.

Bringing the film’s creatures to life started with Stuart Craig,production designer for all eightHarry Pottermovies. Working with producers David Heyman and David Barron; directors Chris Columbus,Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and David Yates and the source—J. K. Rowling-Craig and his team of artists, designers animators, and fabricators used time-honored techniques and invented new practical and digital methods to place the creatures on-screen.

Above all, the creatures had personality and individualityfirst imbued by concept artists Dermot Power, Adam Brockbank, Wayne Barlow, Rob Bliss,Paul Catling, Andrew Williamson, Julian Caldow, and others. “What is the character of this creature?” visual development artist Rob Bliss would ask himself. “Is it good or bad,intelligent or stupid?” Their artwork would provide inspiration and direction for teams of sculptors, modelers,makeup artists, painters, animatronic designers, and digital artists, most of whom worked together throughout the entire film series.
