α-硫辛酸是存在于线粒体内的辅酶，具有众多的生理功能[9]，如今已被研究确认的功能包括：

①作为辅酶，参与蛋白质、碳水化合物和脂肪代谢，可以促线粒体内能量生成[1]。 

②硫辛酸兼具水溶性和脂溶性，还可以活化体内其他抗氧化物，如维生素C、维生素E和谷胱甘肽。 

③硫辛酸可以提高胰岛素敏感性，促进血糖代谢，对抗糖基化[2~5]。  

④硫辛酸可辅助用于肝脏疾病的营养补充，如酒精肝、脂肪肝、肝硬化[6]。  

⑤硫辛酸不仅可以降低重金属的细胞损伤作用，尤其对砷具有良好的螯合效果，可以作为有效的砷解毒剂[7]。
