The Giovanni Sordo estate is located in the heart of the well-known Barolo region, Castiglione Falletto. As an iconic winery with 100 years of history to its name, Sordo is one of the largest estates in the Langhe area, with 53 hectares of vineyards. It produces eight Barolo crus including Gabutti, Parussi, Monvigliero, Monprivato and and Rocche Castiglione.

The estate is a family-run winery, now in the capable hands of Giorgio – Giovanni’s son, the third generation of a family who has been tending and producing wines for more than a century. It was founded in 1912 by the grandfather Giuseppe, but the real turn over came with his son Giovanni who, together with his wife Maria, are the real witness of the family’s story.

Today the Sordo family owns 53 hectares of vineyards, spreading out in the municipalities of Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour and Vezza d’Alba. It produces eight Barolo crus, including its famous Monprivato.

The soil of these vineyards, a compact calcareous marl, is rich in micro-nutrients which, together with the unique microclimate of the Langhe region, creates a perfect environment for the growing of Nebbiolo. It is a vigorous grape which can give amazing wines with powerful aromas and great aging potential.

Sordo is one of the few wineries to have Barolo Riserva until the 1990.

Barolo Riserva matures in traditional big Slavonian oak barrels for 36 months and follows a further aging in the bottles as long as possible.
