The story of the most famous art trial in history, pitting the artist James McNeill Whistler against the critic John Ruskin. In 1877, Ruskin, the most powerful critic of the Victorian age, accused the American painter James McNeill Whistler of "flinging a pot of paint in the public's face" in his painting of a firework display in London's Cremorne Gardens, Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket. Whistler sued for libel. In the resulting trial of 1878, Whistler won the case (if only for a farthing's damages), but the cost of the trial bankrupted him. The case was about much more than a single painting; it centered on the very meaning of art itself.
