WARRIOR CULTURE

From its origins as a computer strategy game created by Blizzard Entertainment to its cinematic epic, the Warcraft saga has existed in a universe with two distinct points of view—and each faction sees itself as the champion, whether it’s the Alliance, made up of humans, dwarves, elves and other races of Azeroth, or the Horde, founded by the orcs of Draenor.
“If you’re a player, you know that part of the appeal is that you can be a hero no matter what side you’re on,” explains Duncan Jones, the director of the Warcraft film from Legendary Entertainment.
In the film, the land of Azeroth is in peril. For many years, the races of Azeroth have shared the prosperous realm, from the human citadel of Stormwind and the dwarven stronghold of Ironforge, to the sylvan forests of the night elves. Under the rule of Stormwind’s King Llane, Azeroth has known peace.
This peace ends when the orcs invade Azeroth, abandoning their stricken homeworld of Draenor at the urging of the corrupt warlock Gul’dan and his war chief Blackhand. Spilling through a magical portal opened by Gul’dan in the swamps of the Black Morass, the marauders spread across Azeroth burning watchtowers and capturing slaves for sacrifice.
