隈研吾于1956年8月8日出生在日本横滨，曾就读于英子学园初中和高中，1979年从东京大学建筑学专业毕业。1985年至1986年，他以访问研究员的身份前往纽约哥伦比亚大学深造。1987年，隈研吾创立了“空间设计工作室”，1990年成立了自己的工作室，名为隈研吾建筑都市设计事务所（Kengo Kuma & Associates）。
