Wuthering Heights is a wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine’s father. After Mr Earnshaw’s death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine’s brother Hindley and wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel masterpiece of English literature.

作者简介

艾米莉·勃朗特（1818～1848），英国女作家。夏洛蒂·勃朗特之妹，安妮·勃朗特之姐。出生于贫苦的牧师之家，曾在生活条件恶劣的寄宿学校求学，也曾随姐姐去比利时学习法语、德语和法国文学，准备将来自办学校，但未如愿。艾米莉性格内向，娴静文雅，从童年时代起就酷爱写诗。1846年，她们三姐妹曾自费出过一本诗集。《呼啸山庄》是她仅有的一部小说，发表于1847年12月。她们三姐妹的三部小说——夏洛蒂的《简·爱》、艾米莉的《呼啸山庄》和小妹妹安妮的《艾格尼斯·格雷》是同一年问世的。除《呼啸山庄》外，艾米莉还创作了193首诗，被认为是英国一位天才的女作家。

Emily Brontë (1818-48) along with her sisters, Charlotte and Anne, is one of the most significant literary figures of the 19th century. She wrote just one strikingly innovative novel but was also a gifted and intense poet.
