Thomas Cole (1801–1848) is widely acknowledged as the greatest American landscape painter of his generation. However, until now, he has typically been presented as an American original, an artist who drew on the American wilderness to create works that are distinct and separate from European precedents. This groundbreaking book presents Cole as an international figure, born in England, who engaged with the major landscape painters of his day. Cole visited Europe from 1829–32, and this book reexamines his seminal works—especially The Oxbow and The Course of Empire—as the ultimate response to his engagement with British art and society, and his experience of Italian landscape painting. Cole's passion for the American wilderness, combined with his fear of the industrial revolution in England, led him to create works that were uniquely responsive to, and even dissenting from, the economic and political rise of the United States and the ecological changes taking place at the time. This publication also discusses Cole's influence on later artists, including Frederic Edwin Church and Ed Ruscha, and includes technical analysis of the artist's methods and materials. Published in conjunction with the exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery, London.
