本教材是在内容依托教学教学理念指导下，基于国家哲学社会科学项目推出的内容语言融合系列教材之一。以美国历史文化发展为线索，展现美国各段历史进程中的国家概况，既训练语言技能，也丰富相关知识。涉及系统的历史内容 帮助读者了解美国各段历史时期的重大事件，系统介绍美国历史文化发展背景。本次改版对难度有所调整，并提供教师资源包，以适应不同层次学生的需要。根据阅读材料的时效性进行增删。增加;互联网 因素， 通过二维码呈现网络资源，增强文化类教材的特色。本书适用于英语专业一、二年级学生，也适用于具有中学英语基础的非英语专业学生和英语爱好者学习。

常俊跃，大连外国语大学教授。主持并完成国家哲学社会科学项目;英语专业基础阶段内容依托式教学改革研究，主持并正在进行国家社会科学基金项目立项;内容依托教学理论指导下英语专业整体课程体系的改革与实践研究。 负责的专业获国家特色专业建设点。

夏洋，大连外国语大学英语学院教授、硕士生导师。发表学术论文二十余篇，主持辽宁省社科基金项目两项，辽宁省教育厅人文社科项目一项，作为重要参与人参加国家社科基金项目两项，其他省部级项目十余项。主编图书十余部，其中《美国历史文化》和《英国历史文化》分别获批;十二五国家规划教材和辽宁省;十二五规划教材。

赵永青，大连外国语大学教授。1989年进入大连外国语学院工作，2003年至2010年任大连外国语学院英语学院副院长、院长。后任大连外国语大学（2013年更名为大连外国语大学）《外语与外语教学》杂志主编。目前兼任中国英语写作教学研究会常务理事，中国英语演讲教学研究会常务理事，英语专业评估委员会评估专家等职务，曾任天津科技大学、哈尔滨师范大学、南京农业大学客座教授。
