1948年出生于南卡罗莱纳州的查尔斯顿市。

四岁时开始自学阅读，而大他十二岁的哥哥也不时给予他指点。五岁时，马克．吐温（Mark Twain）和凡尔纳（Jules Verne）的作品深深吸引了他。

他毕业于南卡罗莱纳的要塞军校（The Citadel），并获得了物理学学位。他曾经两度在驻越南美军中服役，获得了卓越飞行十字章、V字铜星章和两枚越南勇敢十字章。身为一位历史爱好者，他还撰写了许多舞蹈和戏剧评论。

喜爱狩猎、捕鱼和航海等户外运动，以及纸牌、象棋、撞球等室内活动；此外也喜欢收藏烟斗。他从1977年开始写作，立志要写到生命结束才会停笔。目前与妻子一同居住在一幢建于1797年的房子里。

于2007年9月16日下午2时去世，死因为心脏淀粉样变性病（cardiac amyloidosis）。

Jordan在2006年3月公布了医生诊断的结果，发誓要与顽疾作抗战。但是决心和进取心在疾病面前是远远不够的。去世之前Robert Jordan正在书写第十二部也是《时光之轮》系列终章—《光之记忆》（A Memory of Light），按照计划，这本书将在2009年出版，目前仍没有完成。但已备有笔记和录音，作者已经口授所有故事情节。英文z后一卷基本仍会被整理出版。

ROBERT JORDAN (1948-2007) is best known for his internationally bestselling epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time(R), which has sold over 40 million copies in North America and is currently being adapted for the screen. A native of Charleston, Jordan graduated from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, with a degree in physics. He served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Army and received multiple decorations for his service.
