A Prelude to This Book

Why Syntegrative Wisdom? _ A Response to Our Times

We are living in a time of immense disruption and uncertainty. The world faces overlapping crises: climate volatility, technological upheaval, geopolitical conflict, and widening social fragmentation. Rapid digitalisation has yielded not only unprecedented innovation but also unprecedented complexity_intensified by the contradictions between globalisation and anti_globalisation forces, and the increasingly volatile dynamics of online social environments.

The dominant paradigms of the past_be disciplinary silos, nation_state thinking, or human_machine binaries_are no longer adequate to grasp the intricacies of this moment. In such a fractured and fluid world, we urgently need a new form of wisdom: one that can bridge divides, integrate perspectives, and co_create meaning. This is where Syntegrative Wisdom takes root, not as an abstract notion, but as an existential imperative.

Certainly, the aspiration for integration has long existed. Yet the conditions for deep, structural integration_particularly across knowledge systems and intelligences_have only truly emerged in our modern technological society. Consider the nature of Internet platforms and large_scale AI models: they thrive on the very idea of integration. However, these technologies alone do not constitute Syntegrative Wisdom. The uniquely human ability to flexibly synthesise, respond to context, and generate new relational meaning remains irreplaceable.

What Is Syntegrative Wisdom? _ Beyond Combination, Toward Creation

Syntegration here refers to the synergy and integration among all related components, as well as the dynamic "chemical reactions" thereof. Syntegrative Wisdom is defined as "a new cognitive framework_one that enables synergy, balance, and co_creation".

Syntegrative Wisdom is not a mechanical sum of multiple capabilities. It is an "organic fusion" that generates a new form of intelligence through vibrant coupling across dimensions:" East and West, Arts and Sciences, Knowing and Doing, Ancient and Future, Human and Machine." In this fusion, boundaries dissolve not through erasure but through interaction_producing a generative field where contrast fuels creativity, and difference becomes the source of insight.

This wisdom system is both a mindset and a capability framework. It combines imagination, contextual judgment, systems thinking, and ethical awareness with the analytical and computational strengths of digital tools. It is dynamic, adaptive, and generative.

How Might Education Cultivate Syntegrative Wisdom? _ A Systemic Perspective

If Syntegrative Wisdom is indeed what our era demands, then education must become its primary enabler. Drawing on HeXie Management Theory①, we may approach this transformation through three interrelated dimensions: educational objectives, system construction, and practical pathways under certain themes.

First, the goal of education should shift from knowledge transmission to cultivating individuals who possess both the mindset and capability of syntegration. These are people who can navigate complexity, cross disciplinary and cultural boundaries, and co_create value in multi_stakeholder contexts. They must be emotionally attuned, intellectually agile, and ethically grounded.

Second, the structure of education must mirror the very logic of syntegration. The XJTLU 3.0 educational model exemplifies this approach: it breaks down traditional disciplinary barriers, dissolves rigid university boundaries, and constructs an open ecosystem that links education with government, industry, and society. In this model, students engage with real_world systems, and academics conduct research that is both globally aware and locally grounded.

Third, syntegrative education must manifest in practice. Before the vision of cultivating syntegrative individuals can be realised, a range of practical challenges and transitional tasks_what we term "HeXie educational themes"_must be addressed. These require accurate sensing, continuous adjustment, and shared reflection between educators and learners. Just as a small boat navigates shifting winds and currents, so too must educational practices respond to uncertainty through iterative, intelligent action.

This is not a linear process. It is one of mutual reinforcement_between vision and implementation, system and practice, thought and transformation.

An Invitation Sent to You: Join the Journey of Co_Creation

This book grows out of that very spirit. It is not a finished doctrine, but a living dialogue. The chapters ahead assemble a constellation of voices_educators, students, institutional leaders, and thinkers from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. Each speaks from a distinct vantage point, and each contributes to the evolving shape of Syntegrative Wisdom.

This is not an exhaustive account. It is a collective inquiry, shaped as much by what remains unsaid as by what is offered. The true vitality of this book may emerge not in its arguments, but in your engagement_as you read, pause, reflect, mark a margin, or simply sense that you wish to respond.

In doing so, you are already participating in the syntegration this book seeks to explore. And so we invite you to join this shared journey_towards a future shaped by wisdom that integrates, regenerates, and co_creates.
