Rime of the Ancient Mariner《古舟子咏》、Kubla Khan《忽必烈汗》、Frost at Midnight《霜夜》等名篇。
"O pure of heart! thou need’st not ask of me What this strong music in the soul may be!"
One of the major figures of English Romanticism, Samuel Taylor Coleridge created works of remarkable diversity and imaginative genius. The period of his creative friendship with William Wordsworth inspired some of Coleridge’s best-known poems, from the nightmarish vision of the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and the opium-inspired "Kubla Khan" to the sombre passion of "Dejection: An Ode" and the medieval ballad "Christabel." His meditative ‘conversation’ poems, such as "Frost at Midnight" and "This Lime-Tree Bower Mr Prison," reflect on remembrance and solitude, while late works, such as "Youth and Age" and "Constancy to an Ideal Object," are haunting meditations on mortality and lost love.
This volume contains the final texts of all the poems published during Coleridge’s lifetime and a substantial selection from those still in manuscript at his death, arranged in chronological order of composition to show his development as a poet. Also included are an introduction, table of dates, further reading, extensive notes, and indexes of titles and first lines.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834) was one of the first figures of the Romantic movement, and a poet, philosopher and critic. His close friendship with Dorothy and William Wordsworth, whom he met in 1797, led to the publication of the "Lyrical Ballads", which marked a conscious break with poetic tradition and includes one of Coleridge's most famous poems, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner".
Easter Holidays
I
Hail! festal Easter, that dost bring
Approach of sweetly smiling spring,
When Nature’s clad in green:
When feather’d songsters through the grove
With beasts confess the power of love,
And brighten all the scene.
II
Now Youths the breaking stages load,
That swiftly rattling o’er the road
To Greenwich haste away;
While some with sounding oars divide
Of smoothly flowing Thames the tide:
All sing the festive lay.
III
With mirthful dance they beat the ground,
Their shouts of joy the hills resound
And catch the jocund noise:
Without a tear, without a sigh,
Their moments all in transport fly
Till evening ends their joys.
IV
But little think their joyous hearts
Of dire Misfortune’s varied smarts,
Which youthful years conceal;
Thought Less of bitter smiling woe,
Which all mankind are born to know,
And they themselves must feel.
V
Yet he, who wisdom’s paths shall keep,
And virtue firm, that scorns to weep
At ills in fortune’s power;
Through this life’s variegated scene,
In raging storms-- or calms serene,
Shall cheerful spend the hour.
VI
While steady virtue guides his mind,
Heav’n born content he still shall find,
That never sheds a tear:
Without respect to any tide,
His hours away in bliss shall glide,
Like Easter all the year.
