The recipe for Chartreuse Liqueurs was originally given to the Carthusian Monks in 1605. This date marks the very beginning of the Chartreuse tale. Chartreuse liqueur is considered today as one of the oldest liqueurs in the world.
From an old manuscript given to the Chartreuse monks in 1605 to the most known liqueur in the world, the story of Chartreuse liqueur is unique. In the early 17th century, only a few monks and even fewer apothecaries had the skills to blend, infuse, and macerate the 130 different herbs and spices of the recipe to form a perfect balanced liqueur. But in 1737 The Monastery’s Apothecary, Frère Jerome Maubec, finally unravelled the mystery and, in 1737, drew up the practical formula for the preparation of the Elixir. First used as a medicine it was so tasty that it was often used as a beverage rather than a medicine. Recognizing this, the monks, in 1764, adapted the elixir recipe to make a milder beverage which we know today as "Green Chartreuse". In 1838, the Chartreuse distillers developed a sweeter form of Chartreuse: "Yellow Chartreuse".
